The person behind a word owl
My name is JoAnn Kirkland and I am a word owl.
I’ve always surrounded myself with words, reading and writing.
I grew up in a place where winter had teeth, the middle child, with five sisters and three brothers. I attended Catholic grammar school, and there’s a good reason they call it that— talk about boot camp for grammar!
It’s a skill that has come in handy in my career as an freelance editor and proofreader.
I have edited and proofread everything from college application essays, to memoirs, novels, website copy, weekly newspaper columns, even a one-woman off-Broadway show!
I live with my husband on Shelter Island, a place accessible only by ferry, 90 miles from New York City, at the tip of Long Island. Our son graduated from the University of Richmond in 2018 and is currently teaching English in Tokyo.
He didn’t get his wanderlust from me. I’m happy at home, surrounded by books, with two cats, in an old farmhouse by the sea. I’m a pianist and a photographer too, always trying to capture my life in words, music and photographs.
